I just recently wrote a review, yet I feel the need to update it soley due to the fact that I have been here three times in the past week. Apparently I am on a chicken-souvlaki-greek-food kick, but whatever it is, they are doing it right because it keeps me coming back. It can also be the convenience and close proximity to my house. Or perhaps it is my exhaustion from the work week, pure laziness to look further for a dinner option, and my lethargy has kicked in stopping me from going to wegmans and cooking for myself. Consequently, two chicken souvlaki salads and a falafel pita wrap later, I am giving them one more star. I ordered the falafel wrap on a whim, and I was thoroughly impressed. It was a little dry though, and caused me to steal the greek dressing from my salad that I was saving for lunch the following day to put on the wrap. The reason I can't give it 5 stars, regardless of my (too) frequent visits, is...more dill sauce issues!!! (see last review). After paying for the dill sauce and not getting it last time, I was determined to not let that happen again. Unfortunately, this time they were out (whaaaaatt???) of dill sauce! I was looking in the fridge behind the girl, like I didnt believe her. Two days later, when I called to grab a salad for dinner I asked the girl on the phone for dill sauce...still out!!! (unbelieveable). So I said ok, please add a side of Tzatziki sauce. Go in, pay for my order (including the Tzatziki sauce), get home....NO TZATZIKI SAUCE! Oye!

We live just a few blocks away and discovered Vasilis when we were doing our kitchen remodel and needed food (a few times a week for a few weeks) that was quick but not profoundly unhealthy. This did the trick. The menu has diverse offerings--from wraps, to salads, to a fish fry (and a good one, according to my pretty picky husband--and plenty of VEGETARIAN choices that are ready to go in a flash. Crispy fries, hummus appetizers, rice pudding, and all the other things you expect to find at a Greek restaurant are also on the menu. You can even call ahead. The prices are reasonable; not as cheap as Burger King, but less than a "sit down" Greek restaurant. If there's one complaint I would offer, it's about the use of styrofoam containers. Something more environmentally friendly would be wonderful--and would get me through the door more often.

I'm finally annoyed enough with this place to write a review. I live around the corner and when they opened three years ago it was awesome, fresh tasty Greek cooked to order. Over the winter they upped their prices, lowered the quality and apparently hired an entire kitchen of illiterate cooks. If you want your burger anything but well done, it ain't gonna happen. If you think you're going to enjoy that wrap, you won't, it's filled with CHUNKS to iceberg lettuce and tons of onions to take up space - cause you know, a chicken wrap should only be 10% chicken according the owner. If you think that the Greek salad looks tasty, you should know the kitchen doesn't understand when vegetables should no longer be served to customers. I ordered a hot dog (no way you can screw that up, right?) and even when they tried again they couldn't get it right. If you want to be dissapointed or are so drunk that shoe leather would taste good, this place works. If you want something edible, find a different place to eat.

yup, its another greek joint on/near the elmwood village...but you know what? its definitely acceptable fare for a quick bite or a late night snack. AND, i'll patronize this place over their eeee-vil greek compatriots across the street at the preservation-hating Pano's anytime... stopped in for a light night snack with the man, and we were both pleasantly pleased to find both our wraps to be fresh, aptly prepared, and delicious. man had the chicken souvlaki wrap, and i enjoyed the chicken finger mega wrap (well, half of it...while not what i consider to be 'MEGA', this wrap is definitely generously sized). the pita was warm and yummy, as if they had been freshly made; the greens were actually mixed greens (yay!) rather than just romaine hearts; and the chicken in both items was cooked with some skill -- not flavorless or greasy, and there was a ton of it to boot. we also grabbed some baklava and found it to be scrumptious -- flaky, sweet, and full of that delicious nutty filling. it tasted as though it had been freshly made, and for a baklava aficionado such as myself, i was happy to enjoy the fruits of someone's labor. vasilis express doesn't try to be something its not. it is what it is, and it recognizes it. on each of the times i have patronized vasilis express, i have been met with fresh, well prepared food at a decent price point. its not five star dining by any means, but the patio is definitely quaint and charming when its not brimming with drunken college kids, and the interior isn't bad either (meaning, its clean and there are a few reasonably comfortable tables to consume your fare). oh, and on one last note, i found the young staff working last night to be courteous and on top of their game. the kid on the grill cooked up some good chicken, and the girls at the counter were attentive -- and this was the wee hours of sunday morning. so color me just a bit impressed...

Went here for a quick lunch a couple days ago and had the most flavorless chicken souvlaki pita I've experienced in all of Buffalo. It was like they didn't even TRY to season the meat. The fries were off as well - they tasted like they'd been fried in old grease. I picked out the meat and ate the pita and lettuce by itself. I ordered 'for here' and it was called out as 'to go' (and put into a plastic baggy). It only irritated me because when I was ordering it seemed like they weren't listening to me and had better things to do - so I knew as they were calling it out that they had, indeed, not payed attention to the fact that I told them we were eating inside. C'mon. Three stars because my other half had a gyro special with greek potatoes and said it was delicious. I thought the greek potatoes were ungodly sour, but he said he didn't mind it. So, good for him.

I am honestly so sick and tired of the vast abundance of false advertising and crappy restaurants in Buffalo. Vasillis Express is a complete mockery of not only Greek food but of food in general. It's painfully obvious that Vasillis couldn't care less about being a proper restaurant and hope only to capitalize on the indiscriminate student appetite. Their house speciality is the worst Gyro I have ever had. Even ordering it felt surreal. How does the cashier of a Greek restaurant not know how to properly pronounce Gyro? And is it even a Gyro if the chef quick cooks some bits of fatty low quality meat on a griddle? Oh, and you can add about four french fries for $1.25! Sadly, Buffalo's only Fish and Chip restaurant used to live here. Hey Captain Jack, any chance you can move back in when some pre-law student sue Vasilis for false advertising and they go under?

This is one of the best places for late night food in Buffalo. The food is consistently good and fresh tasting (the gyros and the sampler platter are my favorites) and the prices are just right. The service is very quick as well! I would pick this place over Jim's or Mighty any day.

I've probably come here maybe a couple times in a couple years, clearly never wowed to the point of returning regularly but it's good once in a while for me. The falafel 's seem like they were prefrozen and de thawed-so in that sense it really is like fast food when they say "express". Will give props to their fish fry, it is huge, delicious, and comes with generous portions of cole slaw, macaroni salad and some yummy fries-I like their fries ;). I got the veggie burger there for the first time and I just figured by ordering it with "everything" on it would mean the usual at least of I.e. ketchup, etc. but this was not true. It came with no condiments-just a dry burger with lettuce and tomato. It took taking it home and doctoring it up with mayo, cheese, ketchup mustard and onions to raise this burger to the bar I'd prefer.

The only thing I've eaten here so far is the spicy chicken pita wrap (twice). Tastes pretty good to me. But my bf has hated everything else ever ordered, so I think I'll stick to that.

I've been there four times now, for takeout, and it still seems redundant (yet more Greek on Elmwood?) as well as disorganized. The cashier/order takers and the cooks dont seem to be too in-synch. And the fries............not too good in my fry loving opinion. Coated with some unidentifiable rough textured coating and kind of greasy. Three out of the four times, I found something missing from my order after I got home. When I mentioned it a following time, the young cashier looked at me for a second like I'd just asked to borrow money, and returned to her conversation with a family having dinner. I didn't pursue it further. I was hoping for an nearer alternative to Towne takeout, (also notorious for leaving stuff out of your order, but nice about it when you go back) but this isn't it.

  • David A.

The burger and fries were delicious but they were served in a styrofoam container that had melted in several places due to the hot French fry grease. That kind of put a damper on my take out experience because I'm pretty sure that melted styrofoam in your food is very bad for you. Other than that though, the food was good.

Cheap and delicious. Definitely not authentic Greek, but reasonable "sandwich" Greek food the markup. The French fries are delicious.

I have to comment on KIM K. review about Vasilis Express on Elmwood. I happened to be present when this incident was going down. I was enjoying my burger and fries which she happened to complain about. The owner never called her a "fat pig". I guess that was her perception when the owner said "you look like a person who loves McDonald's. Then showed her a fresh half pound burger from the kitchen. I'm sure we all have had a bad experience in restaurants, You either write a review and don't go back or call the establishment, return the meal and give them a chance to make it better. I don't think you should call the restaurant tell them you wrote a bad review and then demand a refund. It's in poor taste. It's a shame on her part she did not handle it very well. She looked like a fool. ENJOY VASILIS EXPRESS I've been eating there often all I can say is it's VERY GOOD, FRESH AND INEXPENSIVE.

We decided to give it another go and not much has changed. The fish was about as bland it can get, but not as greasy. We ditched the coleslaw, threw out the mac salad, although the french fries weren't half bad. Also, the tartar sauce was just 90% mayo. We won't be coming back a third time. Also the hummus wrap was almost completely consistent of iceberg lettuce. I'm not sure why yelp doesn't show my first review for this place, but if you care for another then check out the reviews section of my profile.

My beef soulvaki was made quickly and I was starving. Great job, thanks! Friendly service, even the greek salad was good. I'm not saying it's a date place, but for a quick eat, yum.

Today I came into Vasilis Express for french fries, and came out being screamed at by the man who seems to be the owner (his name was Vasilis). Because I happen to be a young woman treating the cashier with decency and respect, he apparently mistook me for somebody else involved in a conflict with another cashier (? I honestly have no idea) and began to lobby abuses at me, telling me to "get the f**** out", and to "never step foot in [his] restaurant again"... Not a problem. I'm obviously never coming back. I left the restaurant utterly bewildered, shocked, and appalled. Who do you file a complaint with when the owner of the establishment is to blame? The Better Business Bureau? The food may be okay, but the service/owner is terrible. Definitely not worth it.

Taking over the spot of Captain Jack's Fish & Chips is Vasilis Express, a standard Greek take-out joint. Not sure about the business decision of opening up another Greek restaurant on the same block as Panos (one of the most popular restaurants in Buffalo), but Vasilis will appeal more to the grab-n-go crowd. Their menu is more diverse than most places similar to it yet maintaining authenticity. You'll see the usual mix of wraps, gyros, traditional dinners such as Moussaka, burgers to appeal to the masses, and even the fish fry as an homage to Captain Jack's. Their interior is clean and their service was friendly. Another advantage they have is they're open really late-night. The biggest problem, however, was the parking. They somehow have reserved a few spots on Elmwood but for a take-out spot, it's tough to get business w/o a parking lot (and even worse that Panos has a parking lot). But for it's extensive variety, definitely worth checking out again.

Signature sandwich was good. Major complaint: stop using the crappy 'coated' french fries. What happened to regular old potatoes?

Given their three locations, this place is quite convenient for on-the-go Greek. Calling ahead makes the pick up a little easier but if you have 10 min to spare, authentic Greek food awaits you. They're pretty consistent, can't complain for the price & the expectations of in & out service. Gyro & Chicken souvlaki dinners are two sure bets for a great choice!

Usually when I eat here the service is beautiful!. But today... girl no. The girl that answered our phone call supposedly ordered our food but didn't. so instead of waiting 25 minutes we had to wait an hour and a half and be served after everyone waiting . Just because someone was rushing to get out of work. These girls have to go.and also my friends didn't receive the fires with their meal. I don't know how busy it was today but this is insane if you can't deal with food, get out of food service.

Salads, grape leaves, Greek fries, chicken hoagie, and the best falafel I've ever had. Amazing hours as well! Be warned, it's hot inside in the summer and freezing in the winter...but the take out is always on point.

I decided to grab lunch at Vasilis today. I'd never been, but had seen their flashy front window and had meant to visit for a while. Finding myself driving by around 1pm I went for it. The first thing I noticed was the lack of traffic. There was a party of three enjoying salads, but they were the only customers I saw during my 10-15 minute wait for my order. The girl at the counter was coloring in a coloring book for lack of other work. She'd apparently already prepped and stocked everything needed. So how was the food? I went with a gyro wrap and fries to go. The fries were of the battered sort and pretty good. The wrap was mediocre at best. It was almost completely lettuce. The tzatziki sauce had no flavor and was basically plain yogurt. When combined with a shortage of onion and tomato it was basically just a lettuce wrap and a bit of meat. I like my gyros to have a bit of a bite. A delicious treat that results in your inability to talk to anyone for a few hours because it's given you some kicking breath! This fell very short. In addition, the wrap itself was more like the brittle crusty outer surface of a good sub roll hollowed out. It broke apart instantly and made eating a messy ordeal. Thankfully all I spilled was a bunch of lettuce... So why go to Vasilis? The answer is instantly apparent as you walk in. You'll quickly notice a wall of dollar bills with the letters of Greek houses from nearby Buffalo State University. This is late night food conveniently located. It's not good, but it's in stumbling distance of numerous bars. I say leave this one to the college kids. Elmwood has numerous other restaurants offering better Greek food for dine in or carry out.

Waited 25 minutes for a simple gyro wrap. Waaaayyy too much lettuce & tzatziki (about 80% lettuce), wrap fell apart after first 2 bites & they didn't offer feta. What greek restaurant doesn't offer feta?? Boooo.

I love their fries! I have yet to vary from the combo fries and chicken souvlaki wrap, but I plan to branch out and try the grape leaves and falafel. Take out service is fast. only thing that stinks is parking in winter.

BOMB A** Greek: I pick up open souvlaki daily. Juicy meat, fresh lettuce, fast and yummy everyday.

I just had a falafel...It was not very good at all...I think the falafel might have been ordered from a distributor or something because it was deep fried...Didn't think that was possible....It was also loaded with red onions....Wayyy too many, and wayyy too strong...I picked off a bunch of them, and I didn't even finish the falafel, and I still had nothing but onion taste in my mouth after..Yuck, and I am a big onion fan too.....Also, the dressing had no flavor, and the lettuce was iceburg.... I also got the poutine fries...They were probably the most bland I ever had...No taste here at all... In fact both items I got tasted like deep fryer....The falafel was deep fryer and onion flavor, and the poutine was deep fryer flavor... 2 stars only because last year I got some kind of pita thingies and dip or something that was not all that bad.... btw falafel and fries cost $12.98....that was with no drink.

We go here quite a bit for take out. Good option for food to take over to Bidwell and listen to the music in the summer. It has a decent variety and relatively good variety. They are also quite fast. I have an assortment of gripes though. It seems like they often get something wrong with my order or leave something out. It is rare that they seem to remember the tzatziki with my gyro for example and often my salad "without onions" is pretty darn oniony. Also wish they were a little less stingy with olives and cucumbers in the salads. Each salad comes with one olive and two cucumbers (never any deviation from that standard). I guess only sad because my daughters love olives so much. But is easy and close and these small things are not enough to keep us from returning frequently.

I feel guilty for my previous post as my first experience was less than impressive. Turns out, a Greek salad is not the way to go but that there are other delicious options on the menu such as the chicken souvlaki wrap. Over the last two months this has become my go to place to grab a bite when I get out of work late and no other place is open for a decent, debatably healthy meal. They are open until 5 am on the weekends which is straight absurdity. I usually go with the chicken souvlaki wrap which comes with lettuce, onion, tomato, yogurt sauce and chicken on a wrap. The hummus is still pretty standard, but at 1 am when you are getting off a 9 hour serving shift, this hummus is the best thing in the world. Still no whole wheat pita though. Their yogurt sauce is tasty too but they charge extra for it and it's a very small quantity. Lately, due to the fact that they do not offer whole wheat wraps or pita, I have been going with a side of souvlaki chicken and a side of hummus. This only totals $7 and the chicken is insanely flavorful. It's the perfect late night, satisfying meal that doesn't leave you wishing you hadn't indulged when you wake up in the morning. From my experience, the workers behind the counter have always been kind and my order is always waiting for me when I get there. Although this place is open late, it isn't swarming with drunk kids at night which is also a plus.

I was excited to find a Greek place nearby when I moved to the Elmwood area. I was even more excited to find out that this place was opened until so late as I am guilty of being a night scavenger eater. I would say this is a good place to go to if you have an undying craving for gyros or any other Greek-inspired foods that they offer. It does a decent job at satisfying that craving at least for a little. I usually get the lamb gyro, it isn't terribly good food, but for the price, I would say it's not bad as an option. I usually frequent this place after a night of drinking and in the mood for something a little cleaner than Jim's. For what it is, it isn't a bad place.

I came here on my first night in Buffalo. I decided to explore the neighborhood with a couple of kids from my dorm. I do not remember what attracted us to this particular place but whatever it was, thank you. Pros: They have the best burgers, fries, milkshakes, chicken gyros etc. Whatever you order on the menu, you can not go wrong! A burger with fries usually ranges from $7-$11 depending on what you put on your burger. Cons: I do not really like using my debit card when I come here, not they have scams going on or anything, but I have found when I make a purchase with my card it will charge a couple of dollars over the actual price of my order. The charge corrects on its own but it takes a couple of days for it to reflect in your account. I have told the girl at the register about this and she said that is just how their system works. I am sure they can correct that if they wanted to but it is not a big deal but if your order is, for example, $8.50 and you only have $9.00 on your card the order will not process. Besides that, this is a great place.

After a 12 hour day, I can't even begin to think about preparing a fresh, healthy meal. While my fiancé typically hits up Zetti's for a big cheesy slice or two, I make my way to Vasilis. I have had a few different items on their menu, but I always come back to their chicken souvlaki. It is delicious, fast and fairly priced for a decent sized portion. Spending less than ten bucks on takeout that I can squeeze two healthy meals out of makes me smile...And, as a little treat, the baklava ain't bad either!

Very quick and delicious! My favorite is the Falafel pita - the falafel are perfect and the tahini sauce is always a good touch. I've had the gyro dinner which is a good value for the price - enough food for 2 meals! The appetizer sampler is a nice thing to order too but they aren't consistent with the amount of pita they give (sometimes they add sliced cucumbers and tomatoes but sometimes it's just pita).

Late night drinking spree in Elmwood? Come here...it's cheap, cheerful, and fast. Food was decent, but it's a hole in the wall fast food kind of joint, so you get what you expect. I had a Gyro and fries...they were tasty...I can't complain.

This is a great location - formerly it was Captain Jack's Fish and Chips. For some reason I never wanted to go in there. It smelled like a grease factory. Once Vasilis Express opened, I noticed front and center on the menu a picture of their Pita Gyro. A soft thick pita filled with gyro meat, tzatziki, and french fries. French fries in the Pita Gyro?! I remember the first time I had a mega schwarma wrap in Bahrain with french fries packed inside. Come to papa. I was going back for more. Needless to say I was delighted to see that mega schwarma somewhat replicated here in the form of the Pita Gyro. Try it out - I don't think you'll be disappointed. For what this place is - it excels at what it does. It's located on the way to and from Mr. Goodbar and Cole's. It deserves some credit for supplying a tasty gut bomb that at least feels healthier than the Jefferson Steak Hoagie I would get at Jim's Steakout. I actually feel pretty great afterwards. I tend to rate places on how well they excel at what they should be. This place does a pretty dang good job. They haven't closed down yet like 'ol Captain Jack's and there's a reason for that.

This place is good for certain things not for others. Just a place to grab a bite when you dont really want a whole sit down experience. Get: burgers, fries, chicken souvlaki, gyro Pass: chicken avoglemodo soup (its like drinking lemon juice) Its cheap, its clean, the folks are friendly enough. Just make sure you check for condiments, sauces and utensils.

"Express" is a great word to describe this restaurant. Since my visits here have been very short and to the point, my review will be, too. The food here is perfectly serviceable. It's not the best Greek food I've ever had, but when I'm in a hurry, it's filling, flavorful, and cheap. The brief encounters I have had with the staff have been overwhelmingly positive. The staff is always friendly, ringing up my low-cost food with a smile. Basically, don't bring a date here (unless you want to scare them off) and don't expect an authentic Greek meal. But if you're looking for some yummy, cheap food and big portions, Vasilis Express is a great option.

I am so aggravated with this place. We order from time to time, never a problem. When I order a chicken souvlaki salad and it is beautiful...with feta cheese, of course, because THAT is largely what makes it a souvlaki. I decided to do something different, ordered a chicken souvlaki wrap. No tomatoes. Tzatiki on the side. My husband brings our food home and their "Mega Wrap" is...loaded with lettuce, onion, slightly seasoned chicken....and....that's it. I went back to the website thinking I missed something...nope. The website says NOTHING about needing to ask for cheese. I called and the employee who answered had to inquire if the wrap came with feta...she didn't even know the menu. It does not come with feta. How can a chicken souvlaki wrap only have that on it? Plus...as I shared my dismay, the employee could clearly care less about the situation. No offer to make a new one, even if I had to come back to get it. Absolutely terrible. Not sure if I will ever go there again.
